The growing growth of digital technologies has paved the way for a profound transformation in the field of cultural heritage and tourism. One of the most influential of these developments is the emergence of the concept of virtual tourism, which has demonstrated its importance and position, especially during the Corona restrictions. Virtual tourism, beyond providing two-dimensional images or videos of historical sites, will be successful when it can create a realistic, interactive, and inclusive experience of these sites for the audience; an experience that conveys not only visual details, but also values, narratives, and a sense of presence in the place. The aim of this article is to analyze and explain the latest visual design approaches in the realistic recreation of historical sites for virtual tourism and to identify the opportunities and challenges in this field. In this regard, the theoretical foundations of virtual tourism and the concept of realistic recreation will first be addressed, and the role of new visual design principles in creating inclusive experiences will be examined. Then, key technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), 3D modeling, laser scanning, and artificial intelligence are introduced and their applications in the representation of historical heritage are explained. Approaches such as interactive simulation, narrative-based, accurate representation of historical details, and the use of advanced graphics are considered the heart of modern visual design that significantly enhance the quality and attractiveness of virtual tourism. In this article, with a descriptive-analytical approach and a systematic review of recent research, successful domestic and international examples are presented, and a critical analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of these projects is presented. Also, future research directions are considered from the perspective of intelligent combination of technology, narrative, and multisensory interaction. The findings show that the use of modern technologies can increase user interaction with cultural heritage and pave the way for knowledge transfer and promotion of cultural literacy. But technical limitations, high cost, and legal and historical authenticity concerns still require multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary solutions.
